Stonehenge – one of the wonders of the world and the best-known prehistoric monument in Europe. More than a million visitors explore the ancient landscape on foot and step inside the Neolithic Houses to discover the tools and objects of everyday Neolithic life. There is a world-class exhibition and visitor centre with 250 ancient objects and where visitors come face to face with a 5,500 year-old man.
The Stonehenge Environmental Improvements Programme is supported by donors including The Heritage Lottery Fund, The Monument Trust, The Wolfson Foundation, Fidelity UK Foundation, The Linbury Trust, The Headley Trust and Garfield Weston Foundation.
Culture Secretary Maria Miller said: “Stonehenge is one of the UK’s most iconic sites, undeniably worthy of its Unesco world heritage status, attracting one million tourists every year from the UK and all over the world.
“So it’s only right that, after decades of indecision, we can now offer them a visitor exhibition centre and experience they deserve.”
